McEvoy is restless, a wanderer. In Shadow World, we see through his eyes as he grows from a boisterous youth into a man defined by darkness and light. Shadow World inhabits the boundary between narrative fiction and science fiction. By the end of McEvoy’s odyssey he has gained a startling insight into his reality, and perhaps ours as well.

This book really deserves a long review, but it would risk giving away too much. It's science fiction, which isn't apparent for some time. The protagonist may have mental problems or he may be choosing to skip over much that would help us understand the abrupt changes in his life. He learns, loves, leaves, forgets. His life is one of separate chapters that initially seems to have no connection with each other. It begins to come together, but you have to be paying attention. The ending is both a surprise, almost a cliche, and perfectly logical.

I was fascinated by it, and it will be among those that I read over again. The only reason I can't give it five stars is the editing, which provided too many "what the heck?" moments. Words dropped out, words left over from an earlier draft, a few misspellings and a startling instance or two of a male being referred to as "she." It would all be slightly more acceptable if self-published, but I expect better from a publisher. It's no way to treat an author.

Shadow World edition by Chris Impey Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

Good story and the writing was better than I'd expected, really sucked me in! It's a picaresque novel, with 6 or 7 episodes in the protagonist's life. I found it a little too episodic with not enough of a thread between the episodes and not enough of an overall arc. You do find out what's going on at the end but I still found it a bit unsatisfying.
That being said, the author explores some really interesting ideas, and if you like science there's a lot of that too. And each episode really caught me.
I struggled with the first vignette of McEvoy and his trek through the desert, however I was hooked by the time he made it to New York. it's a wonderful mixture of science, philosophy and story telling. a great read!
A really fun read!
This book is a hidden treasure! A total feast for the brain!
The twists and turns of the thriller, the satiation of wanderlust of a traveler, and the embellishment of science education (in a fun way) is a unique combination! Will very strongly recommend this book for the intelligent reader!
Very hard to follow until the very end, when all was revealed. Odd plot, which obviously was the intent'
Put your seatbelt on as you soar with ease through the imagination of Chris Impey. The story is so well researched that it boggles the mind to think that only one person wrote it.
It contains so many typos that you start to expect them to be there. But that is the only distraction to this otherwise superbly crafted piece of fiction.
In all fairness, I have to admit that I've read the other reviews and am intimated by their length. I find reviews helpful and prefer those that are quick and to the point, as this one will be.

I was a bit thrown off by the quirky listing of chapters and subchapters, but after I began reading realized this almost comes together as a series of short stories all around the main character. The series of chapters and tales, almost told in a diary format, were intriguing and the main character, McEvoy, grew throughout the story. I picked this one up as I'm trying to get into Sci-Fi reading. I'll admit, this one wasn't really for me, but that's not due to the author, but more my own taste in what I'm searching for.

The story line was interesting, characters well developed and overall a solid book.
